Presenter:
Naomi Abrams OTD, OTR/L, CEAS
Objectives:
‘Lift with your knees, not with your back.’ ‘Standing is better than sitting.’ ’90-90-90.’ These all probably sound familiar -- they are all still taught in most OT and PT schools as basic “ergonomic principles.” It really is too bad that overall they are not true. In this workshop we’ll go over some of the common myths about protecting yourself while working with clients and the hard truths. We’ll review the correct basic body mechanics that you should be teaching your clients and hopefully practicing yourself. It doesn’t matter if you work in in-patient or out-patient, pediatric or geriatric, or community or institution based practices, these are principles that I hope will run through your mind with every patient encounter and throughout your patient education. Healthcare workers have one of the highest rate of injury amongst ALL trades and that only includes the injuries being reported. We know what works, but it isn’t easy. During this workshop you will get a chance to talk to your peers about methods they use to limit the musculoskeletal strains of everyday practice. As OTs we are the adaptors of the universe, we need to stop just accepting that getting hurt is part of the job description.
