Sensory-Enhanced Yoga for Self-Regulation & Trauma Healing Workshop June 1 & 2

The Retreat Center of Maryland & Sensory-Enhanced Yoga Institute are proud to co-host the Sensory-Enhanced Yoga® for Self-Regulation & Trauma Healing workshop at Blueberry Gardens, Ashton, MD, on Sat/Sun June 1 & 2! This workshop is especially designed for O.T.s, other allied/mental health professionals, and yoga therapists/instructors who would like to learn how to incorporate Sensory-Enhanced Yoga® into their clinical practices to facilitate healing from combat stress, PTSD, anxiety, and related ANS disorders. Led by Lynn Stoller (OT and cert. yoga therapist) with Lucy Lomax (cert. yoga therapist), the course will prese

nt the science/evidence base, theoretical model, guidelines for practice as well as the specific yoga forms, movements, breathing, and meditation techniques to implement the program. Participants will be taught both mat and chair versions as well as strategies for teaching to groups of mixed mobility levels. The workshop is highly experiential and includes a 133-page, detailed manual. The program can be used towards National Board for the Certification of Occupational Therapists (NBCOT) renewal requirements for a total of 16 PDUs and qualifies for 16 Contact Hours through Yoga Alliance. The purpose of DCOTA is to promote the occupational therapy profession within the District of Columbia, to promote and advance education, training, and research in the Profession.

Currently, DCOTA has vacancies for the following positions for full member vote:

· President

The President shall be the Chief Executive Officer of the Association and shall preside at all meetings of the Association membership and Board. The President shall appoint committee chairs for all standing committees of the Board subject to Board approval. The President shall have the power to sign all written obligations of the Association upon approval of the Board of Directors, and shall exercise general powers of supervision and active management of the Association.

· Vice President

The Vice President shall assist the President as requested and assume presidential duties in the absence of the President. In the event of a vacancy in the office of the President, the Vice President shall succeed to the Presidency for the unexpired portion of the President's term. The vice president shall serve on the program committee or serve as chairperson act as liaison between all DCOTA continuing education and program activities.

· Nominations Chair

The Nominations Chair is a member of the DCOTA board and is responsible for advertising, soliciting, and gathering data for nominations for DCOTA offices, and membership awards. They maintain records of previous awardees and coordinate presentation of awards at the annual conference and other events. They are responsible for recruiting candidates for impending vacancies on the DCOTA Board.

SNF PPS: New Patient Driven Payment Model Call — December 11

On October 1, 2019, the new Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM) is replacing Resource Utilization Group, Version IV (RUG-IV) for the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Prospective Payment System (PPS). Topics:

Overview of PDPM, a new case-mix classification system for SNF Part A beneficiaries
Changeover from RUG-IV to PDPM

For more information, review the FY 2019 SNF PPS final rule, and visit the PDPM webpage. A question and answer session follows the presentation; however, attendees may email questions in advance to PDPM@cms.hhs.gov with “December 11 Call” in the subject line. My name is Jaime Schilling, and I am a Post Professional Doctoral student in the Occupational Therapy Department of Quinnipiac University. I am a co-investigator in a study exploring how school-based occupational therapists who spend at least 75% of each week working in public schools within the United States, are supporting student attainment of keyboarding skills for children in grades kindergarten through twelve. Through this brief survey, your answers will be helpful in enhancing our knowledge of the practice patterns and intervention approaches school-based occupational therapists are using in order to promote the development of keyboarding skills in students attending public schools.
This survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete, and your responses are completely anonymous. Violence in Occupational Therapy Workplace

"Workplace violence has become an alarming phenomenon worldwide. Health sector personnel are particularly at risk of violence in their workplace. Current figures represent only the tip of the iceberg… (World Health Organization 2008)

The Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Alberta, with an Occupational Health and Safety Innovation and Engagement grant from Alberta Labour, is building a workplace violence educational resource website.

The website is specifically about and for occupational therapists (OTs) and OT students. An important part of this work is gathering information about OTs’ and OT students experiences of workplace violence. To do this we are using the World Health Organization’s survey tool – Workplace Violence in the Health Sector.

Your opinion and experiences matter- please participate in the OT Violence in the workplace survey .

The survey is completely anonymous and neither the researchers (Cary Brown, Professor, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Alberta and Annette Rivard, OT, PhD, project co-ordinator), nor anyone else, will be able to identify individual participants. There are no risks to you by participating in the survey. You can skip questions if you prefer to not answer all of them and you can exit the survey at any time prior to clicking the submit button at the end. Because the survey is anonymous we cannot remove your data after you submit your survey responses.

Your completing the survey is interpreted as consent to participate. You can quit the survey at any point by closing your browser. The survey responses will be used to help us build the most useful educational resource website for occupational therapists and students. The findings will be shared with OTs through a short report and a formal report may also be published or presented in a forum relevant to therapists.

We are conducting this research under the supervision of Dr. Banks and with the outcome of this survey we plan to determine if occupational therapists believe that they are valued as members of a interdisciplinary team on a medical mission trip. My name is Mindy Garfinkel and I am a post-professional occupational therapy doctoral student at Quinnipiac University. I am conducting a study on therapist perceptions of the 3:1 service delivery model in school-based practice. Unfortunately, research on the effectiveness of this workload (vs. caseload) service delivery model is sparse. The purpose of this study is to add to that body of research. I am currently recruiting therapists from the fields of occupational, speech, and physical therapy. I am looking for practitioners who have used the 3:1 service delivery model in their school based practice, and who would be willing to participate in a brief survey, and interview about their experiences.

Occupational Therapists: (contract/casual on-call)

General Description: Occupational Therapists needed for a research study about different techniques to help informal caregivers deal with agitation and aggression in persons with dementia. This is a 3-year NIA-funded intervention/attention control study. Occupational Therapists will serve as the interventionists. The OT’s will meet with the person with dementia and their family caregiver in the home for up to 8 sessions over the course of 3 months. OT’s will perform a clinical assessment of (1) the person with dementia’s current abilities, (2) the home environment, and (3) the interaction between the person with dementia and their caregiver. OT’s will be trained on the intervention. Attend team meetings. Communicate with study Program Manager and Principal Investigator about all schedule changes and study related issues.

Qualifications:

· OTR with credentials in Maryland, District of Columbia, or Virginia
· Experience working with persons with dementia preferred
· Homecare experience preferred
· Experience using the Allen Batteries preferred
· Ability to follow research protocol.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Flexible schedule
· Strong organization and problem solving skills required.
· Must be able to work independently

Special Considerations:

Must provide own transportation to sessions.

Salary: $40/hour

Laura Gitlin, Ph.D. at the Center for Innovative Care in Aging at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing is looking for Occupational Therapists in Montgomery and Prince Georges county to serve as the interventionists in a research study. City Council Considers a Bill to License Athletic Trainers and Personal Trainers

WASHINGTON, DC -- The District of Columbia city council is considering legislation to license athletic and personal trainers under the Health Licensing Board. The District of Columbia Occupational Therapy Association is working with the American Occupational Therapy Association to review the legislation and its possible impact on occupational therapy services in Washington, DC.

The Council will hear testimony on Friday, June 28 at 11:00 am in the Wilson Building room 500. The executive board of DCOTA will draft a written statement and may send a member to testify at the hearing.

DCOTA is also reaching out to the DC Physical Therapy Association.

DCOTA Works with DC Health Exchange Board to Ensure Access to Habilitation Services

WASHINGTON, DC -- The District of Columbia Occupational Therapy Association sent a board member to participate in setting up the minimum standards for health plans and the DC Health Benefit Exchange (hbx.dc.gov).

DCOTA worked in conjunction with AOTA to ensure that occupational therapy services were specifically included in the definition of habilitation services and that all plans included in the Health Benefit Exchange must cover habilitation services at the same level as rehabilitation services.

Membership in the association helps fund efforts to ensure that occupational therapy services are available at large to the population of the District of Columbia. Join DCOTA at www.dcota.org/app

New Report: States Moving Forward to Implement Health Reform’s Affordable Insurance Exchanges

Twenty-eight States are on their way toward establishing a key component of health care reformundefinedAffordable Insurance Exchangesundefinedaccording to a report issued today by the White House.

“States are taking strong steps to implement health reform,” said White House Deputy Chief of Staff Nancy-Ann DeParle. “The Obama Administration is working in partnership with State leaders across the country. We will ensure Americans in every State have access to an Exchange and the same kinds of insurance choices as Members of Congress.”

Affordable Insurance Exchanges are State-based, one-stop marketplaces where consumers can choose a private qualified health insurance plan that fits their health needs. Beginning in 2014, Exchanges will offer consumers the same kinds of insurance choices that members of Congress will have.

The report released today highlights how some States are moving forward to build Affordable Insurance Exchanges. The States profiled are not necessarily the States most advanced in establishing an Exchange; instead, they illustrate the diversity of approaches and progress being made. Some of the actions in the report include:

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley (R), a physician, issued an Executive Order that created the Alabama Health Insurance Exchange Study Commission on June 2, 2011, which recommended that Alabama establish its own Exchange called the “Alabama Health Insurance Marketplace.” The legislature, which meets in February, is expected to take up legislation to establish an Exchange.
Colorado passed a bipartisan bill to establish the independent Colorado Health Insurance Exchange, which was signed into law on June 1, 2011. The Colorado Exchange has started public education about health reform and the Exchange at its website,www.getcoveredco.org. Organizations such as the Colorado branch of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry have been active participants in the creating the small business component of the Exchange.
In Nevada, unanimous, bipartisan legislation authorized the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange, which was signed into law by Governor Brian Sandoval (R) on June 16, 2011. Its board has been appointed, executive director named, and application submitted for its next round of funding for building the Exchange.

The report outlines some of the steps the Administration has taken to ensure all Americans have access to an exchange beginning in 2014. These include developing the information technology and business systems necessary to facilitate Exchanges in multiple states.

Developing Exchanges is just one of the ways States are implementing health reform. In the nearly two years since President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, States have enforced the patient protections like banning lifetime dollar limits on coverage and ensuring coverage of proven prevention services. Forty-three States and the District of Columbia are participating in the new premium rate review system where insurers must justify the rationale for any double-digit insurance premium increase. All States have received Affordable Care Act grants to improve prevention and public health. And the Affordable Care Act has already made an incredible difference to millions of Americans:

2.5 million more young adults have health insurance.
As of October 2011, more than 2.65 million seniors got a 50 percent discount on their prescription drugs when they hit the donut hole.
Insurance companies can no longer drop your coverage when you get sick or put a lifetime cap on the amount of care you can receive.
